What Are WhatsApp Template Categories?

Also called: WhatsApp message categories, Template categorization, Marketing, utility and authentication templatesUpdated

Template categories
Template categories are Meta’s three types of WhatsApp message template, each priced differently: marketing, utility and authentication. Utility templates must be non-promotional and specific to, requested by or essential to the user, and only authentication templates may carry one-time passcodes.

What are the three WhatsApp template categories?

Every message template on the official WhatsApp Business Platform belongs to one of three categories, and Meta uses the category to decide both the rules the template must follow and the rate it charges when the message is delivered (Meta documentation).

CategoryWhat it is forRule to remember
MarketingPromotions, offers, product news, re-engagementNot currently delivered to United States (+1) phone numbers
UtilityOrder updates, appointment reminders, account or billing noticesMust be non-promotional and either specific to or requested by the user, or essential to them
AuthenticationOne-time passcodes for sign-in or verificationThe only category that may contain a passcode

Marketing templates are not delivered to US numbers as of October 2026 (Meta documentation).

You choose a category when you submit a template. Meta reviews the content and can change the category if the message fits a different one.

What is the difference between utility and marketing templates?

The dividing line is promotion. A utility template is tied to a transaction or request the user already has with you: a shipping update, a booking confirmation, a payment receipt. Add anything promotional, such as a discount, a cross-sell or a general announcement, and Meta treats the whole template as marketing (Meta documentation).

For example, an online store could send “Your order #1234 has shipped” as a utility template, but “Your order has shipped, and here is 10% off your next one” would be categorized as marketing. The split matters because the two are priced differently and, as of October 2026, marketing templates are not delivered to US numbers at all.

Where do service messages fit?

Service is not a template category. Meta uses “service” for free-form, non-template replies sent while a 24-hour customer service window is open. That window starts when a WhatsApp user messages or calls you and resets each time they do so again (Meta documentation). Once it closes, an approved template in one of the three categories above is the only way to reach that person on the official platform.

How do template categories affect what Meta charges?

As of October 3, 2026, Meta charges per delivered message, and the rate depends on the category and the recipient’s market. Undelivered messages are not billed, and messages from users to your business are free (Meta documentation).

Message typeHow Meta charges, as of October 2026
Marketing templatePer delivered message at the market’s marketing rate
Utility templatePer delivered message at the market’s utility rate; since October 1, 2026 this also applies inside an open customer service window
Authentication templatePer delivered message at the market’s authentication rate; some markets have a separate international rate
Service message (free-form reply)First 1,000 delivered service messages per business phone number per month are free; from the 1,001st, charged at that market’s utility and authentication rate

Utility and authentication rates can drop with monthly volume tiers; service messages have none (Meta documentation). If a person arrives from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply inside the window, a free entry point window opens during which marketing, utility, authentication and service messages are not charged.

Meta publishes rate cards by market and may update them up to quarterly, so check Meta’s current pricing page rather than relying on any quoted figure. These are Meta’s fees and are separate from any software subscription.

How does whatsappx.si work with template categories?

The usual way to start with whatsappx.si is to scan a QR code with the WhatsApp you already have, so your whole team replies from one shared inbox, with keyword-triggered auto-replies for common questions. A number connected this way uses WhatsApp’s linked-device feature and sends ordinary messages, so template categories do not apply to it and there are no Meta per-message fees.

Template categories matter only when you add an official number. whatsappx.si can also connect to the official WhatsApp Business Platform through Meta Embedded Signup inside the app. There you create a template with its name, category and language and sync it with Meta, which reviews it and confirms the category. Consider an official number when you need approved templates, messages outside the 24-hour window or automation at scale.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the cheapest category for my template?
Not reliably. You pick a category when you submit, but Meta reviews the content and recategorizes templates that fit a different category, so a promotional message labeled “utility” is moved to marketing. Write utility templates strictly about a transaction or request the user already has, keep offers in marketing templates, and use authentication only for one-time passcodes.
Why was my utility template changed to marketing?
Meta treats a template as marketing if any part of it is promotional or not specific to the user. Common triggers are a discount line, a cross-sell, a general announcement or vague content that could go to anyone. Remove the promotional part and resubmit as utility, or keep it and accept that it will be priced and delivered as a marketing template.
Are marketing templates delivered to US phone numbers?
No, as of October 2026. WhatsApp does not currently deliver marketing template messages to users with United States phone numbers, meaning a +1 dialing code and a US area code. Sends fail with error 131049 and are not billed, because Meta charges only on delivery. Utility, authentication and service messages to US numbers are not affected by this restriction.
Is a service message a template category?
No. Service is Meta’s name for a free-form reply sent while a 24-hour customer service window is open, so no template is involved. Since October 1, 2026, each business phone number gets 1,000 free delivered service messages a month and Meta charges from the 1,001st. Outside the window you must use an approved marketing, utility or authentication template.
Do template categories apply to a QR-linked WhatsApp number?
No. Templates and their categories exist only on the official WhatsApp Business Platform. A number connected by QR code in whatsappx.si uses WhatsApp’s linked-device feature and sends normal messages, with no templates and no Meta per-message fees. Send only small, opted-in batches of 5–10 messages at a time; if WhatsApp restricts the number, that is between you and Meta, and whatsappx.si cannot restore it.
